The Megee Addition — 1883–1884

In 1883, James Edward Tisdale and Sallie Orgain-Harrison-Tisdale sold approximately 182 acres of land to Austin businessman, salesman, and real-estate investor John Thomas Megee. As Hutto began developing around the railroad, Megee subdivided portions of his property into residential and commercial lots. In 1884, he filed a plat containing approximately 15 blocks on the north side of the railroad tracks.

The property now known as 101 Park Street is located within this historic development. Its legal description remains: Megee 1st Addition — Block 15, Southeast Portion, Lot A. This connects the property directly to one of Hutto's earliest planned developments.

Hutto Continues to Grow

In 1886, a devastating tornado destroyed much of Hutto's original business district south of the railroad. As the town rebuilt, development increasingly moved north of the railroad into areas that included the land subdivided by John Thomas Megee and other early developers.

Over the following decades, the Megee Addition became part of the growing residential community surrounding downtown Hutto.

The Present House — Circa 1970

The building currently standing at 101 Park Street was constructed around 1970. Property records describe it as a one-story structure of approximately 1,884 square feet on roughly 0.40 acre. Although the building was later converted for commercial use, evidence indicates that it was originally designed as a residence. A City of Hutto inspection conducted in 2025 documented features commonly associated with a home, including a: Living room, Dining room, Kitchen, Bedrooms, Bathrooms, Front porch, Carport, Mudroom.

Some of the windows were also believed to be original to the building.

Hutto Therapy Center — 2005–2024

A major new chapter for the property began in the early 2000s. In 2005, the building became home to Hutto Therapy Center, a locally owned rehabilitation and therapy practice. For nearly two decades, the property served children, adults, and families from Hutto and the surrounding communities through services that included physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech-language therapy, and related care.

Harley the Hippo — 2005

The property also became part of one of Hutto's most recognizable traditions. In 2005, a large concrete hippo known as “Harley” was placed at the Hutto Therapy Center. Harley weighed approximately 700 pounds and was painted by Rachel Foster-Boldt, one of the owners of Hutto Therapy Center. The hippo became part of Hutto's long-standing tradition of displaying concrete hippos throughout the community, giving 101 Park Street its own place in Hutto's unique hippo history.

The End of Hutto Therapy Center — 2024

After approximately two decades of serving the community, Hutto Therapy Center closed at the end of 2024. The closure marked the end of one of the longest documented uses of the building. But the community-centered purpose of 101 Park Street was not over.

City of Hutto Purchases the Property — 2025

In 2025, the City of Hutto began the process of purchasing the property. Before completing the purchase, City staff conducted an extensive inspection of the building on May 27, 2025. The inspection documented the condition of the house, including foundation movement, settlement, original building components, and other maintenance issues. On June 5, 2025, the Hutto City Council directed the City Manager to proceed with the purchase.

A New Mission — American Legion Post 302

Later in 2025, the City of Hutto began working with Richard A. Oman American Legion Post 302 to give the property another community-focused purpose. On October 2, 2025, the Hutto City Council approved the lease arrangement allowing American Legion Post 302 to use the property.

101 Park Street Today

Today, 101 Park Street serves as a home for activities associated with Richard A. Oman American Legion Post 302 and other community programs.
